The art of Mehndi, otherwise known as henna, has been practiced in India, Pakistan, Africa and Saudi Arabia for more than 5000 years now. In India, we apply Mehndi to commemorate every festival and occasion. There are different types of Mehndi to suit every occasion in our country. One of the most popular among these is bridal mehndi.
Weddings are one occasion where not only the brides themselves but also the relatives and all the merry wedding goers apply mehndi. In fact such is the important of this art, that a special ceremony and a day is reserved just to apply it.
Tradition has it that the darker the color of the mehndi the deeper is the love between the bride and groom. Some traditions also say that till the time the bride’s hands are stained with mehndi, she is exempted from doing any housework.
On her wedding day, every bride wants to be stunning and every bride wants to be original. Mehndi is an integral part of a bride’s outfit and so over the years, artists have come up with numerous innovative designs to suit every bride.
Bridal mehndi itself has numerous types. These designs are subject to the choice of the bride. Some choose intricate designs spread across the hands and legs, reaching their elbows and knees. These designs, sometimes take up to five to six hours to apply.
Applying mehndi can be a gruelling task for both the artist as well as the bride to be. Even after the mehndi is applied the bride has to take care so as not to smudge it and also so that it leaves the best color once it’s dried.
Mehndi in ancient times was applied to the bride in order to help calm her nerves before her big day. A lot has changed since, but one thing remains the same. A wedding is a big day for any bride and mehndi still remains one of the most integral parts of the whole wedding ceremony.
