Region - Maheshwar is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh in the central part of India, literally translated Maheshwar means the dwelling place of lord Shiva. Maheshwar is known as a deeply religious town and is known for its temples. It is renown for its handloom industry, and famous saris known as ‘Maheshwari saris’.
Art - The Maheshwari sari seems to have a royal origin as it is said to have be designed by a queen, Ahilya bai. From then on to was worn in the royal court by all the ladies. The designs on the maheshwari saree till date are said to have been inspired by the art and culture from her court, as well as the temples of Maheshwar. The sari is made from high reeling and weaving cloth, and the local dyeing method. Maheshwari saris have a distinctive look, now even recognised
internationally.
Social Impact – At Craftsvilla we are dedicated to supporting the artisans, who have preserved our rich and diverse heritage and culture and are now finding it difficult to sustain it. We support them by providing them employment and bringing to the world their priceless art in the form of our products. Often we have been able to revive a form of art dying out, due to lack of funds and provide a source of income to countless families. Taking this one step further we have also established a Craftsvilla fund in support of these artisans."
