This new colourful handmade rug from Kashmir is a very different product from the traditional Kashmiri Numdha or felted rug. The Numdha was made typically with a mix of cotton (68%) and wool (32%). The local wool used was not of good quality with a large proportion of dead fibre, so the Numdha was not very strong. Dyes used in the embroidery were also not of the best quality so there was often bleeding of colours with wash. In contrast, the present rug is made entirely of the much superior Merino wool (100%), using colour-fast and Azo-free internationally approved dyes, new techniques and innovative contemporary design. Easy to wash by hand, the care and maintenance of the new rug is also very much easier.
