The Indian saree has come a long way from being a daily wear to taking the fashion world by storm. One of the many popular numbers is the designer georgette sarees. Named after the early 20th-century French dressmaker, Georgette de la Plante, these lightweight, easy to carry and chic sarees have made a special place in the hearts and closets of Indian women.

The origin of this fabric lies in 20th-century France. Madame Georgette de la Plante introduced this gorgeous fabric to the French fashion scene and it was widely used in 1915. It is believed that the main source of inspiration for the georgette fabric was chiffon though georgette is bouncier and less lustrous than its cousin.

Originally made of silk, the modern georgette fabric is made of polyester and synthetic filaments. The threads of the fabric are very thin, thereby giving dresses a light and floating appearance. While pure georgette is made of silk, rayon or polyester is used to weave faux georgette. The thin threads, which are used to make the fabric, are highly twisted, giving the fabric its crinkly appearance. Since georgette fabric accentuates a woman’s curves well, Indian fashion designers are experimenting with the fabric to create designer georgette sarees. A wide variety of georgette sarees such as satin georgette, viscose georgette, silk georgette, polyester georgette and nylon georgette, are available in the market today.

Georgette sarees score over chiffon as they are not as transparent as their cousin, so slightly conservative women can go for a georgette saree without any hesitation. Besides, georgette is a very versatile fabric and is a designer’s dream for experimentation. Famous designers like Satya Paul, Neeta Lulla, Tarun Tahiliani, Suneet Verma and Malini Ramani are known to have experimented with georgette sarees and given them an ethnic twist by using Indian paisley motifs and Mughal-inspired designs on them. Hence, these bouncy and easy-to-wear designer sarees are fast emerging as one of the favourites of the Indian woman.

A variety of georgette sarees is available in the market in various colours and styles for every occasion. Some of the most popular ones are plain georgette sarees, printed georgette saris with elaborate zardosi and embroidery and designer georgette sarees. Earlier, the fabric was meant only for royal families because of its high price. But the use of polyester and new technology has made it affordable for the common people. It is interesting to know that faux georgette is five times cheaper than pure georgette, but it gives the same quality and design. Currently, manufacturers of georgette sarees are growing by leaps and bounds, but most of them are based in Surat, Gujarat. However, online portals today offer a huge collection of designer georgette sarees at reasonable prices. So, if you don’t have one in your closet, this is your cue to buy yourself one without even having to step out of the house.

So this monsoon, treat yourself to a beautiful georgette saree that will keep you effortlessly stylish. Being slightly water resistant, you can absolutely wear it in a light drizzle without being soaked to the bone. Log onto Craftsvilla for our monsoon collection of georgette sarees. Happy shopping!
